RELIGION AND HOMOSEXUALITY: INTERSECTIONS, CONFLICTS, AND EVOLVING PERSPECTIVES
Main Article Content
Abstract
Religion and sexuality have always played a vital role in shaping who we are, influencing our morals, societal values, and laws. Notably, the interplay between religion and homosexuality sparks essential conversations. Various faith traditions offer diverse interpretations of sacred texts and cultural contexts, leading to differing views on same-sex relationships. While some institutions may adhere to traditional beliefs, many others are embracing inclusivity and equality, fostering a more welcoming atmosphere. This journey towards understanding and acceptance showcases the evolving nature of faith in our contemporary world, highlighting a brighter future for all. India’s rich tapestry of religious diversity adds depth to the conversation around homosexuality, making it both fascinating and nuanced. The interplay between Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Jainism has intricately shaped cultural and moral views on sexuality. While ancient Indian traditions often embraced fluid understandings of gender and desire, the era of colonial rule, influenced by Victorian morals, significantly shifted societal attitudes. However, we are witnessing a positive change, especially after the landmark 2018 Supreme Court decision decriminalising consensual same-sex relations. This study aims to explore both the historical and contemporary religious perspectives on homosexuality in India, highlighting the dynamic influence of religion on law and society, as well as the ongoing journey of acceptance and the challenges faced in the post-colonial context. Let us delve into this critical dialogue together.
