Cybersecurity Challenges for Relevant Government Authorities' Digital Platforms

Abstract

This study examines the cybersecurity issues around the digital platforms of Relevant Government Authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The rapid growth of e-government services has made governmental systems for identity, citizenship, residency, and custom quicker and more efficient. But it has also made them more vulnerable to cyberattacks.


The systems store very critical data such as personal and biometric details, making it a prime target for hackers. Cyberattacks could result in severe issues such as identity theft, system outages and even national security vulnerabilities. As a result, cybersecurity is a serious concern, not just a technical one.


The research notes that cyber-attacks are more sophisticated now. Cybercriminals employ techniques such as phishing, ransomware and other advanced, hard-to-detect attacks. And with the introduction of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing, the speed and efficiency of the system have improved, but so have the threats.


A key challenge highlighted is the trade-off between making systems accessible and making them secure. If it is too tight, it is inconvenient. If it is too open, it becomes unsafe. So, there needs to be a balance.


Our research indicates that the UAE has robust cybersecurity measures in place, and relevant government authorities employ sophisticated protection technologies such as encryption, access control and monitoring. But threats are also changing, and systems need to be updated regularly. The other thing to consider is people. Sometimes employees might make errors or get tricked, which can result in security issues even if the system is secure.


To sum up, the paper recommends enhancing cybersecurity through the adoption of new approaches such as Zero Trust, AI for cybersecurity, regular testing, and employee training. It also stresses the importance of cooperation between countries to fight cybercrime. In short, securing the systems is crucial to provide safe services and security for the nation.
