Exploring the Use of Open Educational Resources by Students and Research Scholars of Central University of Tamil Nadu

Abstract

This study discusses student engagement with Open Educational Resources (OER) among students of Central University of Tamil Nadu. It examines the awareness and use of OER among students, their level of engagement, the benefits they perceive and the challenges they face while accessing and using these resources. The study uses a descriptive survey research design using a structured questionnaire administered through Google Forms. Responses from 214 students were received in the survey, but 185 respondents who were aware of OER were selected for data analysis. The data were analysed using IBM SPSS, with both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The results suggest a high awareness of OER among students, with YouTube lectures and online courses being the most frequently used resources. Students engage moderately and have positive feelings about OER, especially regarding self-directed learning, better understanding of subjects, improving academic performance and reducing educational costs. On the other hand, challenges faced are related to the availability of quality OER, poor internet connectivity, lack of guidance and lack of awareness. Research shows that OER plays a significant role in helping students become successful and engaged in higher education.
