Artificial Intelligence and Employment Dynamics in India: Evidence on Job Displacement, Job Creation, and Workforce Readiness

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of the twenty-first century, reshaping industries, business operations, and labor markets worldwide. While AI offers significant opportunities for productivity enhancement, innovation, and economic growth, concerns regarding job displacement and workforce preparedness continue to dominate academic and policy discussions. India, with its large and diverse workforce, faces unique challenges and opportunities in adapting to AI-driven transformation. This study investigates the relationship between AI adoption and employment trends in India through a quantitative analysis of 600 respondents from different industries and organizational levels. Statistical techniques including frequency analysis and regression analysis were employed to examine the effects of AI adoption on employment, job displacement, job creation, and workforce readiness.


The findings reveal that AI adoption significantly influences employment trends across sectors. Regression analysis indicates a strong relationship between AI adoption and employment outcomes, explaining 67.8% of the variation in employment trends. The results further demonstrate that AI-driven automation contributes significantly to job displacement, particularly in routine and technical roles. Simultaneously, AI has generated substantial opportunities in emerging occupations such as AI specialists, automation supervisors, data analysts, and cybersecurity professionals. Despite these opportunities, workforce preparedness remains inadequate, with a majority of respondents reporting insufficient readiness to adapt to AI-induced changes. The study highlights the critical importance of reskilling initiatives, educational reforms, industry collaboration, and government intervention in ensuring inclusive labor market transitions.


The research contributes to the growing literature on AI and employment by providing empirical evidence from the Indian context. The findings offer practical implications for policymakers, educational institutions, and organizations seeking to maximize the benefits of AI while minimizing labor market disruptions.
