Abstract

Entrepreneurship has emerged as a vital catalyst for economic growth, innovation, employment generation, and sustainable development in India. Over the past three decades, the country's entrepreneurial landscape has undergone significant transformation, driven by economic liberalization, rapid technological advancements, globalization, and supportive government initiatives. Flagship programmes such as Startup India, make in India, Digital India, Skill India, and Stand-Up India have played a pivotal role in strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem by fostering innovation, improving access to finance, enhancing digital infrastructure, and promoting startup development across diverse sectors. This review paper critically examines the evolution of entrepreneurship in India by synthesizing existing literature on the entrepreneurial ecosystem, growth opportunities, key challenges, government policy interventions, sector-wise entrepreneurial development, and emerging trends. A narrative literature review methodology was adopted, drawing upon peer-reviewed journal articles, government reports, policy documents, books, and publications from national and international organizations. The review indicates that India possesses substantial entrepreneurial potential owing to its demographic dividend, expanding digital economy, increasing technological adoption, vibrant startup ecosystem, and growing integration with global markets. However, challenges such as limited access to finance, regulatory complexities, infrastructure deficiencies, skill gaps, technological disparities, and regional inequalities continue to impede sustainable entrepreneurial development. The study also highlights emerging trends, including artificial intelligence, deep technology, green entrepreneurship, women-led enterprises, and social entrepreneurship, as key drivers of the future entrepreneurial landscape. Based on the synthesized evidence, the review emphasizes the need for continuous policy reforms, stronger institutional support, enhanced entrepreneurship education, improved innovation ecosystems, and inclusive development strategies to strengthen entrepreneurship in India. Furthermore, the study identifies existing research gaps and proposes future research directions to support evidence-based policymaking and sustainable entrepreneurial growth.
