Linguistic Sciences in Andalusia During the Emirate and Caliphate Periods Through the Book Al-Muqtabis by Ibn Hayyan al-Qurtubi (d. 469 AH / 1076 CE)

Abstract

The linguistic sciences in Andalusia received great attention during the Emirate and Caliphate periods, as they contributed to serving the Arabic language and its teachings. These sciences witnessed remarkable activity in the fields of grammar, language, and prose. The book Al-Muqtabis by Ibn Hayyan al-Qurtubi contains a great deal of reports that highlight the Andalusians' interest in these sciences and reveal the role of scholars and scholarly circles in disseminating them. From this standpoint, the research addresses the most prominent manifestations of these sciences in Andalusia during this period, relying on what Ibn Hayyan recorded in his book.
