Ethics of Virtual Companionship and Emotional Intelligence in the Age of Loneliness: A Philosophical Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Loneliness is a growing problem in today's society. As a result, there is a growing interest in using virtual companions through Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a source of emotional support. These systems are designed to exhibit empathy and to interact with humans, but they also pose serious ethical and philosophical issues about authenticity, autonomy and human dignity. The study is qualitative, based on philosophical analysis, conceptual analysis and normative ethical reasoning in virtual companionship. The research, which references existentialism and phenomenology, Kantian deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics and feminist care ethics, critically examines the ethical acceptability of emotionally intelligent AI systems. The results indicate that AI companions can decrease psychological loneliness and offer short-term emotional help, specifically for susceptible individuals, however not replace genuine relationships with other people or moral reciprocity. The study presents the term pseudo-empathy as a term to describe emotion responsiveness that is simulated rather than real and identifies ethical issues related to emotional dependency, transparency, and commercialization. It ends with a set of ethical guidelines for the responsible development and management of AI-powered virtual companions, adding to the dialogue on AI ethics and the well-being of humans.
