Unionization in Indian Industries: Challenges and Opportunities in Workforce Transformation through Industry 4.0

Abstract

The study focused on the dual effects of technologies associated with Industry 4.0 and trade union activity on labor relations and workforce transition in Indian industries. It examined how "automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital platforms" are changing the employment landscape, and what role unions play in protecting workers' rights and facilitating upskilling. The research design included a mixed-methods approach that included stratified random sampling of 200 participant workers, with the responses analyzed using SPSS regression procedures. The results suggested that the role of technology associated with Industry 4.0 had a weak positive and statistically significant impact on labor relations (R² = .030, p = .013) but with limited explanatory power. In contrast, union activity had a fair to moderate, significant influence on workforce transition (R² = .245, p = .000), signifying its role in managing technological displacement as an outcome of Industry 4.0 technologies. Generally, the results indicate that while Industry 4.0 technologies may Phillips et al. (2021) alter the traditional employment landscape and relations, an active union presence may stimulate an effective upskilling process and a more fair and resilient workforce transition.
