The Cognitive Basis of Bilingual Language Processing

Abstract

              This thorough analysis combines behavioural, neuroimaging, and electrophysiological data to clarify the mental processes that underlie multilingual language comprehension. The essential functions of the prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia, and executive control are highlighted in studying bilingual language control, switching, and linguistic rivalry. The benefits of bilingualism for cognition are highlighted, and theories of language representation and processing are informed by the implications examined for language acquisition, cognitive development, and brain plasticity. Neural plasticity studies, cognitive training paradigms, and longitudinal studies are some of the future study avenues.
