ARMENIAN-ALBANIAN LEXICAL PARALLELS

Abstract

The present article is devoted to the examination of lexical parallels and commonalities between Armenian and Albanian within the framework of historical-comparative linguistics. At the center of the study are a number of words and roots (բեր/բերել, վառեմ, ատա/ատտա, սղին/սղոն), which either require a new etymological interpretation or have hitherto remained outside the attention of specialists. Drawing on the written monuments of Armenian, dialectal data, and Albanian etymological dictionaries, the article substantiates the native Indo-European origin of the words under examination and reveals their commonality with the corresponding Albanian forms (bark, vjer, at, akull). The importance of studying the vocabulary of Armenian dialects is also demonstrated, since Armenian dialects have preserved such meanings of Indo-European roots that are not attested in Classical Armenian (Grabar).
