Abstract

This research investigates the strategic development of the international premium motorcycle market (500 cc and above) using a comparative approach of five major brands: Ducati, BMW Motorrad, Harley-Davidson, Triumph and KTM, in the context of the fast-paced changes of technology, regulations and customer demographics. The paper, which employs a mixed-methods, theory-informed approach that combines the analysis of markets (2024-2026), brand strategy and technology adoption (AI-powered Advanced Rider Assistance Systems, connectivity and electrification pathways), defines the conditions of competitive advantage in a fragmented premium segment. The findings reveal a shift in the value created from displacement to software-defined performance, safety-as-a-service and brand ecosystems based on lifestyle. The key to sustained leadership is to balance the optimization of internal combustion, scalable electrification strategies and digital platforms, with heritage being a key asset. The study contributes to the growing body of excellent mobility research by institutionalizing the ‘Electrification Paradox' and proposes a ‘Gateway Strategy' for mid-capacity premiumization in emerging markets.
