Abstract
The Qur’anic discourse forms a rich corpus for pragmatic study, particularly the narrative sections, as they encompass linguistic and contextual issues. Deixis is one of the most important topics in pragmatics for studying this kind of discourse. For this reason, the research is entitled: ‘Pragmatics of deixis in Sūrat Yūsuf (Yusef), peace be upon him’.
The study focuses on the different types of deixis (person, temporal, spatial, discourse, and social), based on the context, situation, and circumstances in which the discourse was produced. The study aims to trace deictic elements, identify their references and reveal their role in meaning.
The most important result is that the story of Yūsuf contains a variety of deictic units because it is the longest story narrated in detail in the Qur’an. These deictic elements significantly contribute to an understanding of the pragmatics of the discourse and the identification of its components.
