Effect of spirituality as a protective and/or risk factor against suicidal ideation in university students

Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of spirituality as a protective and/or risk factor against suicidal ideation in university students. Method: Study type: Quantitative – Non-experimental – descriptive – explanatory design. Study design: analytical cross-sectional survey. Data was collected using two instruments: the PANSI Suicide Ideation Inventory and the Parsian & Dunning Spirituality Questionnaire (SQ) (Díaz, Muñoz, De Vargas (2012)). A simple random sampling method was used, selecting participants from among the 18,149 students enrolled in the first semester of 2024 at the Remington University Corporation's various campuses across the country. Independent variables : Spirituality as a protective and/or risk factor. Dependent variable: Suicidal ideation. Intervening variables: Sex, age, and religious/spiritual group. Results: This study aims to determine the effect of spirituality on suicidal ideation in university students and how it can be a protective and/or risk factor in some cases. It is hoped that this work will contribute to the Remington University Corporation and the university community in terms of health promotion, the creation of a prevention program, and the development of alerts or campaigns to prevent suicide and promote a sense of purpose in life. It is important to suggest to universities the great importance of the humanities in their curricula, since they provide students with elements related to care, respect for one's own life and the life of others, as well as promoting the meaning of life for each of its members.
