Abstract

Contemporary organizational finance has been shaped by an accumulation logic — the maximization of shareholder returns as the singular measure of financial health — that is generating mounting evidence of ecological, social, and systemic financial costs. This paper argues that classical Daoist philosophy contains a sophisticated and internally coherent theory of wealth that offers a fundamentally different normative foundation: one grounded in flow, balance, and harmonious circulation rather than accumulation and control. Drawing on the Daode jing (with reference to Lynn’s 1999 scholarly translation), the Zhuangzi Inner Chapters (Watson 1968), and the Guanzi Qingzhong chapters (Rickett 1998), we develop a Daoist theory of financial harmony comprising three constitutive principles: liushui (flowing water as the model of healthy financial circulation), jiedu caiwu (resourceful restraint and balanced stewardship — a principle grounded in the Daoist concept of zhi zu, knowing sufficiency, and the Zhuangzi’s account of ziran), and wu wei zhi cai (non-coercive financial governance). We map these principles onto three contemporary organizational finance debates: shareholder primacy versus stakeholder capitalism, the philosophical foundations of ESG investing, and the governance of systemic financial risk, with an extended application to human resource management that reframes workforce investment as a circulatory imperative grounded in Daoist cosmological logic. Our analysis reveals that Daoist financial thought anticipates several insights now gaining traction in heterodox economics and sustainability finance, yet offers a more philosophically coherent grounding than existing frameworks provide. We further show that the Guanzi — a composite text whose Huang-Lao and Daoist strata we carefully distinguish from its Legalist elements — contains proto-monetary and fiscal governance theory directly relevant to contemporary organizational finance. The paper concludes by proposing the Daoist Financial Harmony Framework (DFHF) as an integrated normative model, presented with three analytical tables and two conceptual figures..
