Abstract

This article develops recommendations for university education from Daoist principles through a secondary analysis of existing sources. It synthesizes classical Daoist texts in translation, Daoist studies scholarship, and educational philosophy that has already brought Daoist ideas into conversation with teaching, learning, curriculum, leadership, and contemplative practice. The article argues that Daoism should not be reduced to a classroom technique or to a vague celebration of spontaneity. Read carefully, Daoist concepts such as dao 道, wuwei 無為, ziran 自然, de 德, pu 樸, qi 氣, yangsheng 養生, emptiness, water-like responsiveness, yin-yang 陰陽 balance, and the usefulness of the apparently useless offer a coherent educational orientation. That orientation understands learning as a responsive way-making within relational, embodied, and ecological conditions. The analysis identifies a recurrent pattern in the existing literature: Daoist education privileges conditions over coercion, indirect influence over managerial control, embodied attunement over disembodied information transfer, plural development over standardization, and non-instrumental cultivation over narrow performance. On that basis, the article proposes eight recommendations for university education: teach by designing conditions rather than forcing outcomes; build curricula that balance structure and spontaneity; redesign assessment as revision, feedback, and maturation; protect emptiness and slow attention in courses; integrate embodied and ecological learning; cultivate relational de through trustful academic communities; defend the usefulness of non-instrumental inquiry; and govern universities with light, responsive, and equity-conscious forms of wuwei. The conclusion clarifies safeguards against common misreadings: wuwei is not negligence, ziran is not social Darwinism, simplicity is not austerity, and Daoist-informed education should not appropriate Daoism without historical and religious literacy.
