Gen Z’s Conversational Language Practices in Everyday English Contexts

Abstract

  In an age increasingly shaped by digital communication, the role of grammar in everyday English conversations particularly among Generation Z has become both more flexible and more contested. Despite the prevalence of informal and abbreviated language online, there remains limited research on how Gen Z perceives and navigates grammatical norms in their daily interactions. This study seeks to fill that gap by exploring the attitudes and behaviors of Gen Z individuals regarding the importance of grammar in both face-to-face and digital communication contexts. Using an exploratory qualitative design, data will be collected through one-on-one interviews with 18 Gen Z participants who regularly use English in everyday conversations. The study employs reflexive thematic analysis to examine how participants treat grammar whether attentively or casually and how this treatment influences their communication styles, self-expression, and social dynamics. The expected outcomes of the research include a deeper understanding of the nuanced ways in which grammar is valued or de-emphasized by Gen Z, and how these choices affect interpersonal communication.
