Abstract

Background: Mindfulness and Vipassana meditation, both rooted in early Buddhist contemplative traditions, are often discussed as practices that can shape not just attention and stress but also the way people think and act in moral situations. While the psychological and clinical benefits of these practices have been studied a lot, the question of whether they actually improve moral and ethical development is still open and somewhat contested.

Objective: This systematic review brings together empirical evidence from the last two decades to look at how mindfulness and Vipassana meditation influence moral reasoning, prosocial behaviour, and ethical conduct across different populations.

Methods: The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A structured search was carried out across four databases, namely Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science, covering studies published between January 2005 and December 2024. Boolean combinations of terms like "mindfulness", "Vipassana", "moral development", "ethical reasoning", and "prosocial behaviour" were used. After title screening, abstract review, and full-text assessment, 28 studies were included in the final synthesis, drawn from an initial pool of 1,684 records.

Results: The included studies suggest a generally positive but uneven relationship between meditation practice and moral outcomes. Vipassana meditation showed especially strong effects on reduced aggression, improved emotional regulation, and lower recidivism in incarcerated populations. Mindfulness-based interventions, particularly those that included explicit ethical components, were linked to higher moral reasoning scores and greater prosocial behaviour. However, several studies also reported limited or even slightly negative effects, especially when ethical training was missing from the intervention.

Conclusion: Mindfulness and Vipassana meditation can support moral and ethical development, but the size and direction of the effect depend heavily on the context, the inclusion of ethical instruction, and the quality of the study design. The review highlights the need for better controlled trials and clearer reporting in future work.
